Mark Hovanes: Home theater surround sound speakers plug/wire into the receiver.
Joeann Hoyt: A home theater audio system requires a minimum of 5.1 speakers with the .1 being the subwoofer. 5 speakers are left and right main speakers, 1 center channel speaker, and two surround speakers. These speakers then need a amplifier with amplification for all the speakers (except for the subwoofer, as they are generally self powered). You also need a preamplifier which allows you to plug in all your audio sources and for extra costs can have video switching as well. This preamplifier will also have surround sound processing which will decode the surround material from the movie soundtrack and decode it to the appropriate speakers. This amplification and preamplifier can be separate which gives you the best sound or built in with ether a integrated amplifier, or receiver (which also has a built in tuner or radio) The more they are separated out and not built into one piec! e you will get better performance and sound quality. There are vast differences in the quality of speakers and components and each part of the system is important and contributes to the sound quality. It is endless what you can spend easily in the millions, to very cheap all in one systems. Be very careful in buying cheap surround systems as most not only sound bad, but are not built to last and if anything breaks ( and it will in these cheaper systems) it will more expensive to fix than what the system is worth. So do yourself a favor save some money, buy a decent system that will actually sound good, and last. The best place to buy a good system is your local independent high end audio video store as they carry the better lines of speakers and equipment and the salesmen have years of experience designing and installing better systems. Sure most of these stores carry some of the very best and very expensive systems, but they also generally carry some exceptional sounding! budget gear as well, so they can pretty much design a system ! for most every ones budget. Don't be surprised if your not familiar with the better brands of speakers and equipment, as they do not advertise on TV or the typical generic audio magazines. The better equipment is only reviewed and publicized in the better magazines like The Perfect Vision, and Stereophile, because they have highly knowledgeable and experienced audio video reviewers who know what they are doing.Forget the chain stores as they have no clue what they are doing, and 98% of the equipment they carry low end anyway.Do yourself a favor save up some money, discover a high end dealer in your area, take your time, and learn about the better systems and equipment and you will then have a system that will actually sound good, and you can be proud to own.Kevin40 years high end audio video specialist...Show more
Claudio Drullard: Do NOT buy one of those 'systems' with a disk drive built into a skinny receiver and cheap attached speakers. We get 20+ complaints here ! when people try to do more than just play disks on the included drive on these systems. These 'systems' do not need a receiver as the skinny box combines the disk drive and amp in 1 small unit. And the low price is tempting. But - how do you hook up the HDTV to play television sounds through the 'system'? How about hooking up a game system? The cheap systems do not have the connections for this. This is the number one complaint we get.You want a system with:* A full sized AV Receiver* A separate, self-powered subwoofer* 5 monitor style speakersThis will give you a LOT more than the skinny box systems....Show more
Marvel Mcaulay: Another major component of a home theater that depends on the size of the room is the speaker. The number of speakers for your home theater system is dependent on the size of the room. You may add up to six speakers from the basic three speakers if you want a more lifelike sound. Adding a subwoofer may also be good to achieve a complete surro! und sound like in the movie theaters. Three speakers should be the mini! mum; you may go up to six if the room is big....Show more
Arnulfo Seegars: "Frequency Response : BASS : 10Hz ~ 300Hz" FR down to10 hz !? I don't suppose so. This dinky little approach is not going to play that low in 1,000,000 years. In fact the only subs i have ever heard of even coming close to 10 hz were of the homemade, infinite-baffle type, which are built into the wall and attic of a house. If you happen to pay more than $a hundred and twenty for this HTIB method, then you're getting ripped off.
Jammie Taddei: I love everything in Kevin L's answer, but I don't think you're looking to dive into that level of home theater. I think a home-theater-in-a-box should be good enough for you. Blake's answer is pretty good regarding those.
Mitzie Clough: If you're getting a speaker system, that will probably come with the av receiver (a black box that all of the wires go into). There are many options on how you connect it to the TV. If it it a newer receiver, it! might have hdmi ports, so you could plug an hdmi cable from the receiver, to the TV. If not, there is the digital optical option. That is a cable that also plugs in from the TV to the receiver. If you have a cable box, then you could plug in an hdmi and/or digital optical cable into that from the receiver. When you get you speaker system, there will be a manuel with all of the information you will need, and will even have diagrams....Show more
